One of a Kind? WLH 50

2018
This chapter is devoted to analysis and discussion of the enigmatic robust WLH 50 cranium. It provides the story of its discovery and outlines WLH 50's robust and archaic traits, providing metrical data that emphasise its robust construction. These are compared with other hominins from around the world. There is also discussion of the possibility of pathology causing its extraordinary cranial vault thickness. The discussion raises the possibility of genetic adaptation among early modern humans selecting for a defence against malaria. The discussion also suggests that other robust traits of this individual may be a consequence of intermixing between archaic and modern humans before or after entering Australia.
