MRI in the Assessment of Cardiopulmonary Interaction

2021
Cardiopulmonary interactions occur due to complex coupling between the cardiovascular and the respiratory systems. In current clinical practice, a multimodality approach is typically utilized based on the presentation and clinical questions that need to be addressed. Several novel techniques such as Dynamic contrast imaging, Fourier Decomposition, Diffusion Weighted, and Hyperpolarized gas enhanced imaging have been utilized for functional imaging of the lung and can be combined with anatomical images to assess cardiopulmonary interactions in the lungs. We describe the role of MRI in assessing cardiopulmonary interactions in a range of cardiac and pulmonary diseases in this review.
