Non-porphyrinoid photosensitizers mediated photodynamic inactivation against bacteria
2019
Abstract Nowadays we are approaching the “post-antibiotic era,” and the multi-drug resistant bacteria become a serious problem. Thus, the new strategies of infection treatment are extensively searching. Among others, an interesting method is photodynamic
antimicrobial chemotherapy. The photodynamic phenomenon is based on the interaction of
photosensitizer(inactive in the dark), molecular oxygen and light. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the non-porphyrinoid classes of the
photosensitizerslike
phenothiazines, fullerenes, and
BODIPYs. Moreover, future perspective and trends in the development of photodynamic inactivation of bacteria are also described.
