Internet provision for staff and students: an information-rich approach

1998
Abstract The Internet, combined with the intranet for locally held material, is an important concept in information flow, not least because it can be set up with little trouble and be used easily. An Internet–intranet–LAN system is described as used in an academic environment of 70 staff and several hundred students. Whereas some information can be accessed publicly, there is much that need to be kept on a “local” server. This restriction may be due to its sensitive nature, because of copyright restrictions or because students may need to work within a closed environment. Several uses of the system employed are described to show how information can be passed around and used at various levels within the school. An example is also given of teaching about the WWW and using simple HTML coding in a final-year class to produce an “encyclopaedia”.
