Synthesis of activated carbon from biomass

2021
Activated carbon is a peculiar and multifaceted adsorbent. It has greater surface area & structure having fine pores as a result adsorption cap acity and surface reactivity of activated carbon is very high. Activated carbons can amalgamate using diversified matter. For commercial purpose frequently used cellulosic precursors are coconut shells & various grades of coal (mainly peat & lignite).Variance takes place in precursors regarding structure and carbon content. Due to high carbon content pine wood is found to be a valuable precious primal matter to produce highly porous activated carbon. A further study regarding low cost and radical adsorbent will add on to the imp erishability of the environs and render propitious perks for the mercantile scheme in coming times. Pyrolysis is performed applying vacuum condition in the absence of oxygen to emphasize the surface area and to evolve interconnecting porosity. West biomass is a cost effective material for synthesis of activated carbon. Activated carbon produced by pyrolysis process has higher surface area of 969.075 m2/g.
