Smart-MEMS based inertial measurement units: gyro-free approach to improve the grade

Inertial measurement units(IMU) are essentially a combination of acceleration and rotation rate sensors, generating positionand attitude information. For tactical and strategic applications, traditional macro-scale technologies are currently employed, owing to their very high accuracies and low drift. But they are very bulky and power consuming. Recent advancements in micro-electro- mechanical-systems(MEMS) technology together with smart data fusion techniques have enabled us to explore MEMS based IMUs, which is the subject of this paper.
