AXIOM: Advanced X‐ray imaging of the magnetosheath

2012
AXIOM (Advanced X-ray Imaging Of the Magnetosphere) is a concept mission which aims to explain how the Earth's magnetosphereresponds to the changing impact of the solar windusing a unique method never attempted before; performing wide-field soft X-rayimaging and spectroscopy of the magnetosheath, magnetopauseand bow shock at high spatial and temporal resolution. Global imaging of these regions is possible because of the solar windcharge exchange (SWCX) process which produces elevated soft X-rayemission from the interaction of high charge-state solar windions with primarily neutral hydrogen in the Earth's exosphereand near-interplanetary space
