Detección del riesgo de lesión renal en fumadores

2021
The etiology of various types of cancer, in addition to pathologies related to the cardiovascular and respiratory system, lies in the consumption of tobacco. Today, new studies suggest that tobacco causes kidney damage that can degenerate into chronic long-term kidney failure. However, the parameters used in clinic to detect renal damage, such as plasma creatinine, are not useful to show dysfunction. Therefore, the most innovative diagnostic methods include urinary biomarkers of early renal damage, which would prevent the progression of kidney disease. On the other hand, based on previous studies of our laboratory, the concept of acquired predisposition to kidney damage has been developed, as well as the existence of urinary biomarkers associated with this condition. Our goal is to study whether certain predisposition biomarkers are able to detect among smokers those who are predisposed to suffer renal damage. Our results show that some of these biomarkers are excreted in urine significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers. The increased excretion of these biomarkers could be related to a predisposition of smoking individuals to suffer renal damage, a key aspect to be considered in clinical practice.
