Abstract Awajanoran ( 1 ), a new dihydrobenzofuranderivative, was isolated from an agar-culture of Acremoniumsp. AWA16-1, which had been isolated fromsea mud collected at Awajishima Island in Japan. Thestructure of 1 was elucidated on the basis of a spectroscopicanalysis. This compound inhibited the growth of A549cells, the human lungadenocarcinoma cell line, with anIC 50 value of 17mg/ml, and also showed antimicrobialactivity. Keywords Awajanoran, Acremoniumsp. AWA16-1,dihydrobenzofuran, cytotoxic, antimicrobialMarine microorganisms have been drawing increasingattention as an important source of chemically interestingand biologically active secondary metabolites for thedevelopment of new pharmaceutical agents [1]. We havebeen screening marine-derived microorganism for theirantimicroalgal, antibacterial and antitumor activities to findnovel bioactive substances[2 4]. In the course ofscreening for antitumor substances, we detected activity inan extract of the marine-derived fungus, AWA16-1, whichhad been isolated from sea mud of Awajishima Island inJapan. This fungus (AWA16-1) was identified as
