Maxillary sinus aspergillosis associated with migration of a dental implant: A case report

Abstract A 65-year-old man with a chief complaint of rhinorrhea was referred to our hospital. A dental implant was placed 11 years prior to his referral, and prosthetic treatment was performed at the same dental clinic. X-ray imaging showed a migrated dental implant surrounded by dense tissue containing small radiopaque particles in the left maxillary sinus. The migrated dental implant and surrounding amorphous mass were removed under general anesthesia. Histopathological examination of the extracted object showed hyphae of Aspergillus and a thickened sinus membrane with infiltration of inflammatory cells. Therefore, we diagnosed the patient with maxillary sinus aspergillosis. Chemotherapeutic treatment with clarithromycin was performed after surgery; however, the symptoms persisted for a year. We consulted the department of otolaryngology, and endoscopic sinus surgery was performed. After surgery, the symptoms gradually subsided.
