Recent HIV seroprevalence levels by country: June 1996.

1996
The US Bureau of the Censuss International Programs Center has been compiling HIV seroprevalence information for its HIV/AIDS Surveillance Database since 1987. This report updates that database incorporating all available epidemiological information on developing countries presented at the Third International Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific and the Ninth International Conference on AIDS and STDs in Africa. Both conferences were held during Fall 1995. The update also represents an ongoing review of the scientific literature for relevant information. The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Database currently contains about 27000 individual data records drawn from 3422 publications and presentations. Items drawn from the database for inclusion in this report include summary tables showing available seroprevalence estimates for high- and low-risk population groups in major cities and rural areas for all developing countries. Tables are provided for both HIV-1 and HIV-2 where available. Urban data for Africa have also been plotted on maps showing distribution by country. Data quality qualifications and organization are discussed.
