Pathogenesis of invasive disease

Before 1905 (the year treatment with antimeningococcal serum started) the case fatality rate(CFR) of invasive meningococcal disease(IMD) was 70 to 90% [1]. Patients with severe sepsis or septic shockdied rapidly, usually within 24 hours.
