Preparation and properties of PVC-based ultrafiltration membrane reinforced by in-situ synthesized p-aramid nanoparticles

Abstract In this paper, p-aramid nanoparticles (p-ANPs) were successfully prepared in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) solution by in-situ condensation of para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and para-benzoyl chloride (TPC). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that p-ANPs with diameters of 4–7 nm were distributed in PVC matrix evenly. The obtained solution could be directly used as casting solution to prepare p-ANP/PVC composite ultrafiltration membranes by phase inversion technology. The cross-section structure and surface roughness of the ultrafiltration membranes were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The mechanical properties, hydrophilicity and ultrafiltration properties of the membranes were also studied. It was confirmed that p-ANP enhanced the mechanical properties of the ultrafiltration membrane, improved the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface, and improved the antifouling properties. Meanwhile, good rejection and flux performance were maintained. The novel and facile preparation method of p-aramid nanomaterials and its composites is of great significance for prompting new applications of aramid fibers.
