Monitoring theSpringBloom inan IceCovered Fjord withtheLand/Ocean BiogeochemicalObservatory
2007
The Land/OceanBiogeochemical Observatory (LOBO)system wasinitially developed byMBARI undertheNSF
Biocomplexityprogramtomonitor theland/ocean interface for coastal zonemanagement. Thesystemutilizes highly robust and accurate sensors toprovide sustained monitoring ofcritical watershed habitats inchallenging environmental conditions in realtime.Withtheincorporation ofnovel anti-fouling technology developed byWET Labs, thesystemhasanunprecedented six weekmaintenance cycle, greatly reducing operational costs while providing highquality datasets.LOBO measurements include nitrate, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature,
chlorophyll fluorescence, turbidity andCDOM. A LOBO wasdeployed intheNorthwest Arm ofHalifax HarbourinJanuaryof2007andhasbeenmonitoring the biogeochemical parameters continuously since (see httpHlobo.satlantic.co
