Station Keeping in Ice -- Ice Tank Experiment and Estimation of Ice Load on Ship-shaped Floating Structure Under Managed Ice Condition

In order to find the feasibility of the Arctic drilling and development using floating offshore structures, the authors conduced the research on ice loads in managed ice condition exerted on the ship-shape floater by experiment and numerical simulation. The experiment was conducted at the ice model basin of the National Maritime Research Institute, Japan. Through the comparison with experimental results, it was found that the numerical simulation was capable of predicting ice load qualitatively well. It showed goo agreement for the surge force and predicted the same order of sway force. Finally, a simple prediction formula was established for the average surge and sway force, and yaw movement. Its accuracy was validated by the experimental data.
