Building Peace to Save Nature: Multi-disciplinary Approaches to Managing Conflicts in Conservation
2021
Conservation conflicts are highly complex and challenging issues to understand and address. Such problems involve ecological and economic arguments that are centred around conservation, such as disputes over land rights and access, or the management of wildlife. However, conflicts often have roots that go beyond conservation, concerning social, cultural, historical and political matters. These dimensions are typically latent, requiring significant expertise and resources to disentangle and overcome. The management of conservation conflicts should therefore be carefully considered and enacted in a way that reflects the multi-dimensional nature of such phenomena.
