The invention relates to a method for controlling the starter of a heat engine of a vehicle equipped with a stop system automatic re-start of the engine, the starter comprising a pinion which can be rotated and engaged with the crown of the flywheel in supplying an electric motor. According to the invention, - it is determined in a test bench engine speed decay model, - at the start of stopping the engine, is predicted from said model the decay profile (10) of the engine speed, - one determines in said profile of the target areas schemes (11, 12, 13) depending on at least one criterion (e.g., between two top dead centers), - one selects one (12) of said target areas schemes - one feeds said electric motor, and - the pinion is engaged in said ring when its speed reaches the selected target area.
