The major accomplishments of the AIDSTECH project in the Philippines are described. Targeting prostitutes in Olongapo and Angeles City the project achieved and went beyond many of its 1st-year goals. The project completed a baseline survey of a random sample of 10544 female prostitutes securing knowledge attitude practice and situational variables related to AIDS prevention. 150 male prostitutes and 50 Mama-sans and managers were also interviewed over the course of the year. A local 37-member AIDS task force was created to help the project construct policy for effective strategic intervention coordinate with local influentials and businessmen collaborate with government and nongovernmental agencies review and recommend various project proposals expand condom distribution develop and promote the education campaign and educational materials and work with public relations. Next the project coordinated direct AIDS prevention educational activities to prostitutes and management staff collaborated with the Department of Health regarding the potential of linking this project to other AIDS prevention projects and developed long-term strategies for AIDS prevention in these 2 cities. Assistance was also rendered to expand these prevention strategies to the national level. On the basis of the projects 1st-year achievements the report calls for continued support with a goal of expanding and institutionalizing these activities in other high risk populations.
