Enhancing Mathematics within a Family Holiday Context

2005
This article was written reflecting the mathematical facts, questions and problem solving involved in the context of a recent school holiday airplane trip from Melbourne to Perth with my two primary school-aged children (8 and 10 years). These experiences are examples of personally relevant mathematical activities involving measurement, chance and data, and number. The activities arose from the children's own questions and statements and helped to promote numeracy through the heightening of the senses that result from a holiday context and thus maximise engagement. Holidays can provide the natural link between the home, school and the community while having fun and adventure.
