Recent HIV seroprevalence levels by country: December 1994.

1994
USAID supports the US Bureau of the Censuss International Programs Center in compiling HIV seroprevalence data for its HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base. The Center has published its semiannual update to the data base which includes all available epidemiologic data for developing countries presented at the 10th International Conference on AIDS in Japan in August 1994. As of December 1994 the data base has around 23000 individual data records derived from 3037 publications and presentations. This research note only contains data and summaries of HIV seroprevalence levels for countries in Africa and Asia. It contains summary tables of HIV seroprevalence estimates for high and low risk population groups in major cities and rural areas for all developing countries. Where available the report provides tables on HIV-1 and HIV-2 data. Maps show HIV/AIDS distribution in Africa and in some Asian countries. There is an overview of HIV/AIDS in Asia. The research note contains a section on data quality issues: sample-size bias geographic bias testing bias nonrepresentative samples and HIV-1 and HIV-2 overlap. Another section addresses data organization. It also discusses selection criteria. It has a 3-page list of references for the overview of HIV/AIDS in Asia. The research note concludes with a 9-page list of references used for the entire report.
