Electronic and ionic transport in organic materials and devices

2021
Abstract This chapter is devoted to the electronic and ionic transport in organic materials and devices. The basics of charge transport in organic materials are described highlighting the various transport mechanisms involved and the role of the density of states. Then ionic transport is introduced providing the fundamental ion transport equations. Example of relevant characterization techniques recently used in mixed ionic-electronic conducting polymers are provided. Focusing on mixed ionic-electronic conductors, the ion-electron charge coupling mechanisms are outlined and relevant devices and applications including supercapacitors, organic electrochemical transistors, electrodes, and ionic delivery devices are presented and discussed.
