Properties and mechanism of waterborne epoxy resin-SBR composite modified emulsified asphalt

2021
Abstract The objective of this paper is to investigate the properties and mechanism of Waterborne Epoxy Resin-SBR Composite Modified Emulsified Asphalt (WER-SCMEA), which can be used as the binder of micro-surfacing. The properties of WER-SCMEA were investigated by a series of laboratory tests. The mechanism was analyzed by the fluorescence microscope and Infrared Spectroscopy. Results show that the Waterborne Epoxy Resin (WER) can improve the performance of SBR modified emulsified asphalt effectively, such as the thermal stability and adhesion. Besides, the WER system (WER and curing agent) has good dispersion and it is dispersed in asphalt evenly. However, the low temperature performance is weak. The strength mechanism of WER-SCMEA is the comprehensive effects of curing reaction, physical intertwine and chemical cross-linking reaction. Therefore, it can be concluded that the WER-SCMEA has good properties and stability.
