Mental Health and Body Image in PCOS

2020
Abstract (100-120words) Polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with cardiometabolic comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia and likely cardiovascular disease. Recently, there is increasing data for increased prevalence of psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders in this population. Although body weight, hirsutism, acne and negative body image have been implicated as underlying risk factors, they do not explain the entire association between PCOS and these disorders. A few studies show that first line treatments for PCOS such as lifestyle interventions and use of hormonal contraceptives may improve depressive and anxiety symptoms. Screening for both depressive and anxiety symptoms is recommended in order to provide timely treatment to this high risk population.
