Dark Matter Limits from Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies with the HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory
2018
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC)
gamma-ray
observatoryis a wide
fieldof
view
observatorysensitive to 500 GeV - 100 TeV
gamma raysand cosmic rays. It can also perform diverse
indirectsearches for
dark matter(DM)
annihilationand decay. Among the most promising targets for the
indirectdetection of
dark matterare
dwarf spheroidal galaxies. These objects are expected to have few astrophysical sources of
gamma raysbut high
dark mattercontent, making them ideal candidates for an
indirect
dark matterdetection with
gamma rays. Here we present individual limits on the
annihilationcross section and decay lifetime for 15
dwarf spheroidal galaxieswithin the HAWC
field-of-
view, as well as their combined limit. These are the first limits on the
annihilationcross section and decay lifetime using data collected with HAWC.
