Transient phosphenium and arsenium ions, generated by fluoride abstraction of bis( m -terphenyl)fluoropnictogens, underwent intramolecular electrophilic attack prior to methyl group migration and gave rise to isolable 9-phospha- and 9-arsena-fluorenium ions.
