Notes of a protein crystallographer: the beauty of rose windows and the different meanings of symmetry

The magnificent rose windowsof the Gothiccathedrals provide artistic illustrations of many of the planar point groupsof symmetry. It is suggested that the presence of certain symmetry elements and their selection by the artists could have been motivated to convey specific meaning to the resulting compositions.
