Embolization of a rare case of focal nodular hyperplasia in an adolescent boy

2021
Abstract This report highlights a special case of focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) in a 14-year-old boy. FNH is a benign liver lesion which typically presents in middle-aged women. Symptomatic FNH lesions, lesions of large size, or lesions in problematic locations are often surgically resected. Surgical treatment options such as resection or liver transplantation were discussed in our case, however the mass was deemed unresectable due to its central location and proximity to vascular structures. Super-selective particle embolization of this hypervascular benign mass proved to be an effective treatment resulting in complete resolution of symptoms and significant reduction of the size of the mass, with no post-procedural complications.
