Preliminary experiments of photoelectron thermometry

2013
In this paper we performed ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) measurements to obtain sample temperatures of a single crystal surface of Cu(110) in temperatures ranging from 10 K to 300 K. The Fermi-Dirac distribution function was applied to the high energy spectral edge of the photoelectron distribution. The data was then adapted to a Gaussian distribution which represents the instrumental resolution. The difference between measured and adapted temperatures expands at the higher temperature range. The present experiment results were consistent with the previous theoretical work on energy resolution and sensitivity of photoelectron measurements for determination of thermodynamic temperature.
