Mapping and Indigenous Peoples in the Arctic
2020
A variety of mapping work has been done in collaboration with, or in relation to, Indigenous communities and organizations in the Bering Sea, Bering Strait region, and Barents Sea region. We outline Indigenous concerns related to mapping and make recommendations about future mapping work that would further empower Indigenous communities. Additional mapping work led by and done in collaboration with Indigenous communities, and focused on equity, capacity building, and appropriate methods is needed. A recognition of the value of Indigenous and Traditional Knowledge, including spatial information, will contribute to more effective and informed decision making.
