Conference Theme: The Science and Art of Design

1. Background and Purpose of the Conference

The "Oriental Design Forum" was initiated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and invited renowned design scholars with global influence from both domestic and international backgrounds. The forum focuses on the forefront of design theory and practical issues. The purpose of the forum is to gather ideas, integrate resources, plan for the future, and create a globally competitive and socially influential design platform. With strong support from various aspects, the "Oriental Design Forum" has been successfully held in Shanghai for eight sessions. The themes of the previous eight forums revolved around the construction of design disciplines, Oriental design philosophy, the Belt and Road Initiative and Oriental design, regional revitalization and holistic design, East-West design comparison, aesthetics of life and innovative design, rural revitalization and Oriental design, and the exploration of the Metaverse and innovative design, achieving fruitful results.

At the 5th Oriental Design Forum held in 2019, the organizing committee released the "Shanghai Declaration on Design Science" , which formed a consensus on the cognition, development, future, and common mission of design disciplines and design professionals. At the same time, the D9 Alliance was established, hoping to unite professionals in the design industry to jointly build the Design Science Tower. In September 2022, the 5th edition of the "Graduate Education Discipline Catalog (2022)" issued by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education included design as a first-level discipline in the newly established interdisciplinary category. Shanghai Jiao Tong University has a tradition of integrating science and art, and the integration of science and art is the greatest interdisciplinary intersection. The focus of this forum on "Science and Art of Design" is to promote a revolution in design theory and practice in this era of breakthrough innovation, and to create a new design logic, design system, and design approach.

Based on this, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the International Society for Design Science (ISDS) plan to hold the "The 9th Oriental Design Forum and the Inaugural Conference of the Shanghai Representative Office of the International Design for Science Society (USA)" in Shanghai in September 2023 (specific time and location subject to conference notifications). The conference will invite senior experts, researchers, and industry pioneers from the fields of art, design, science, and humanities to jointly explore relevant content on design science and art, promote the development of design disciplines, and improve the theoretical system of Oriental design. The conference will also hold the 3rd International Design Education Achievement Award ceremony.

The conference is now open for paper submissions to scholars, professionals, and practitioners in related fields of academia, science, technology, arts, and design from both domestic and international backgrounds. The organizers sincerely look forward to the participation of colleagues from academia and industry, especially university professors, doctoral students, and master students in related disciplines.

5. Paper Submission Deadline

Forum publication: 30th August, 2023.

ISDS dual journal submission and publication: no specific deadline.

6. Paper Requirements

6.1 Content requirements for papers

The submitted papers should be in line with the theme of the conference, have theoretical foresight and practical significance, clear viewpoints, detailed information, and standardized references. The organizing committee will organize experts and scholars to select the papers (the submitting experts are not included in the final evaluation committee). The selected authors will receive conference invitations. The selected papers will be published in the publicly distributed international academic journals "International Journal of Design Science" or "Journal of Oriental Design." The organizing committee will provide the selected authors with the corresponding journals and award the excellent paper authors with "the GOD Prize" certificate of outstanding paper from the International Society for Design Science.

6.2 Paper format and submission requirements

1. The full text should be between 5,000 and 15,000 words, with a self-selected title, and provide abstracts, keywords, and references in both Chinese and English. If you need to publish in the "International Journal of Design Science," you must submit an English version (you can also submit a Chinese version first and submit the English version after acceptance).

2. The paper should be in Word format, with A4 paper layout, and sent to the secretariat by email. Please keep a copy for yourself.

3. The submission title should be filled in as "2023 Oriental Design Forum Paper Submission + Author's Name + Affiliation." Each author can submit up to 2 papers as the first author.

4. Please indicate the author's name, affiliation, title, contact information (address, postal code, mobile phone, email), etc., at the end of the paper for timely communication.

5. The paper should guarantee originality and not have been published or presented at domestic or international publications or conferences. The paper should not involve confidentiality or plagiarism, and the author is responsible for the content.
