Delegations from Multiple Universities Visit SJTU

In the latter half of 2023, Shanghai Jiao Tong University successively hosted several university delegations from around the world. Shanghai Jiao Tong University engaged in friendly exchanges with the visiting delegations and discussed plans for advancing future collaborations. The following content is arranged in chronological order.

 

Delegation of British University Presidents Visits SJTU

On the morning of September 20, a delegation of over 30 presidents from British universities visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Yang Zhenbin, the Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with the delegation at the Conference Center of the Wenbo Building on the Minhang Campus. The participants engaged in enthusiastic discussions covering topics such as university research and innovation, economic and social development, cooperation opportunities in the Yangtze River Delta region, interdisciplinary teaching and research, and international collaboration in research.

 

University Leadership Meets with Yu Haisui, Executive Deputy President and Academic Director of the University of Leeds

On the morning of September 20, Yang Zhenbin, the Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with the delegation led by Yu Haisui, Executive Deputy President and Academic Director of the University of Leeds, at the Minhang Campus.

 

University Leadership Meets with Stefan Östlund, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)

On September 27, Xu Xuemin, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with Stefan Östlund, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden, at the Minhang Campus. Xu Xuemin and Stefan Östlund co-chaired the joint doctoral supervision committee meeting, reviewing the progress of the collaborative program and deliberating on the list of selected candidates.

 

University Leaders Meet with the Delegation from the University of Michigan

On October 11th, Valeria Bertacco, Vice Provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs at the University of Michigan, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Vice President Xu Xuemin met with the delegation at the Minhang campus.

Xu Xuemin expressed that the collaboration between the two universities has yielded fruitful results, and the UM-SJTU Joint Institute has been a model for Sino-foreign cooperative education in China. Over the past decade, the collaboration has produced a large number of outstanding graduates with an international perspective. He looks forward to further strengthening exchanges and deepening cooperation in areas such as sustainable development, fostering talents, and research, aiming for mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.

Valeria Bertacco expressed great pleasure in witnessing the remarkable achievements of the joint education program between the two universities. She fully recognized the significance of cooperation in talent cultivation and research. In the next steps, she pledged to encourage more students from the University of Michigan to come to Shanghai Jiao Tong University for learning and exchange. She also expressed a strong desire to enhance collaboration between the two universities in areas such as climate change and sustainable development, addressing global challenges together.

 

University Leaders Meet with Sarah McDonald, Vice President of Monash University, Australia

On October 11th, Xu Xuemin, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with Sarah McDonald, Vice President of Monash University, Australia, at the Minhang campus.

Xu Xuemin warmly welcomed the visit of Sarah McDonald and her delegation. He expressed that Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Monash University have established a long-standing and friendly collaboration, engaging in multi-level and multi-disciplinary cooperation, with distinctive features in student exchange programs.

Sarah McDonald acknowledged that Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the key partner universities for Monash University in China. She emphasized the importance placed by Monash University on cultivating students' international perspectives and competencies. The collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been delightful. She expressed her hope to restart student exchange programs between the two universities through this visit, explore the renewal of several joint degree programs, expand areas of research cooperation, and jointly address challenges in sustainable development and environmental protection.

 

University Leadership Meets Delegation from the University of Minnesota

On the morning of October 17th, Deputy President Xu Xuemin met with Harvey Charles, Vice Provost of the University of Minnesota, at the Xuhui Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Deputy President Xu warmly welcomed Harvey Charles and his delegation. She expressed that the two universities have maintained close contact and have a solid foundation for cooperation. She hoped to further expand the scope and scale of collaboration, facilitating more students from the University of Minnesota to come to Shanghai Jiao Tong University for exchange programs and research internships.

Harvey Charles stated that the University of Minnesota attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchange. Particularly, the multifaceted collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University over the years has been significant. He looks forward to establishing even closer cooperation with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, especially in programs involving visiting scholars and other collaborative initiatives.

 

University Leaders Meet with President Mark Scott and Delegation from the University of Sydney

On November 6th, the President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Ding Kuilin, and Vice President Xu Xuemin met with the President of the University of Sydney, Mark Scott, at the Xuhui campus.

Ding Kuilin warmly welcomed Mark Scott and his delegation. He mentioned that SJTU and the University of Sydney have maintained a good long-term cooperative relationship with a solid foundation and extensive collaboration. Achievements in joint seed funding, student exchange programs, and more have been successful. Against the backdrop of the recent warming of relations between China and Australia, this visit provides an excellent opportunity for both sides to discuss further expansion and deepening of cooperation.

Mark Scott emphasized that SJTU and the University of Sydney are two very similar higher education institutions, both comprehensive universities with a comprehensive and well-rounded research system. Both institutions focus on similar issues and hope to collaborate on joint research projects in areas such as climate change, marine science, and sustainable development.

During the meeting, the two parties renewed the framework agreement for inter-university cooperation, aiming to continue strengthening comprehensive research and teaching collaboration. The first university-level cooperation agreement between the two universities was initially signed in 1998.

 

Leaders of the University Meet with Vice President Peter Lievens and Delegation from KU Leuven, Belgium

On November 9th, Xu Xuemin, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with Peter Lievens, Vice President of KU Leuven, at the Xuhui campus.

Xu Xuemin warmly welcomed Peter Lievens and his delegation, expressing that SJTU and KU Leuven have maintained a good long-term cooperative relationship with extensive collaboration in various fields. The cooperation projects include double master's programs, semester exchanges, joint funds, and the joint establishment of the China-Europe Cultural Center. She hopes that, building on the existing collaboration, both universities can promote more exchanges and cooperation through bilateral seminars, joint student training, and other initiatives.

Vice President Peter Lievens stated that SJTU is one of KU Leuven's most important partners in China. Both universities are among the top institutions in their respective countries, bearing significant responsibilities for talent development. Further strengthening cooperation will contribute to delivering more interdisciplinary, cross-cultural global leaders to society, making substantial contributions to human development and social progress.

 

Leadership of the University Meets Delegation from Cornell University

On the morning of November 10, Xu Xuemin, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with Wendy Wolford, Vice Provost of Cornell University, and her delegation at the Minhang campus.

Xu Xuemin warmly welcomed Wendy Wolford and her delegation. She mentioned that the two universities have maintained close contact and deep friendship over the years. Despite the limitations on offline exchanges during the pandemic, the collaboration under the seed fund between the two universities has been fruitful. For the next steps, she suggested further promoting student exchanges, establishing joint Ph.D. programs, and deepening research collaboration in various areas, including sustainable development.

Wendy Wolford responded warmly, expressing gratitude for Shanghai Jiao Tong University's reception of over a hundred Cornell students who couldn't return to the United States during the pandemic. She hoped for more personnel exchanges in the future. Wendy Wolford mentioned that the seed fund projects are highly popular at Cornell, and she looks forward to expanding cooperation into new areas and promoting interdisciplinary research collaboration between the two universities.
