ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This Summer School Program aims to cultivate participants’ aesthetic taste and knowledge of traditional and contemporary Chinese art, develop their multi-cultural perspective, and inspire their creativity. The courses are a mixture of theory, hands-on workshops and museum visits, and are run by professors and experts from China and other nations. The program is designed to introduce participants to the best Chinese cultural practices and creative processes while providing an opportunity for participants to accomplish real projects proposed by Chinese enterprises, and to develop a network of cultural and creative industry contacts in China.

There are two classes available this year. Class 1 is more art and history oriented and accredited by the CLIC (Canada Learning Initiative in China). Class 2 is more culturally and creatively oriented.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Professor Yilin MU ( born 1944 in Shanghai ), a member of the Chinese Art Association, is the representative inheritor of intangible cultural heritage – like traditional Chinese painting ( Bo Painting ) as well as the executive director of the Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Association. His inheritance and research since 1983 into ancient Chinese Bo Painting created a unique modern Bo Painting art, and made a great contribution to the renaissance of Chinese painting in the world. His artworks are collected by world-famous dignitaries. Professor MU also won the first prize of the international Chinese Exhibition held by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, the first prize of the Shanghai Art Exhibition and some others.

LECTURERS AND PARTNERS

Professor Jincheng SU

Professor Jincheng SU, academic director, member of the China National Academy of Sculpture, China Literature and Art Critics Association and the Shanghai Artist Association. He is a master of traditional Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, as well as the postgraduate supervisor of the College of Fine Arts of Shanghai University. His artworks are exhibited and collected by Chinese, Japanese, Italian and many other foreign dignitaries and institutions. Professor Su is the dean of Shanghai Huixin Mercy Painting and Calligraphy Co For many years he engaged in public welfare undertakings, so professor Su received ‘Shanghai Top 10 volunteers’ award and ‘The 100 most beautiful volunteers of China’ nomination.

Ms. Yan LI

Ms. Yan LI, National Second Grade Actor. She is an opera figure teacher (Opera figure is a fundamental course of over 300 different types of traditional Chinese opera. It optimizes actors’ body coordination and beauty in rhythm. ) for the Shanghai Theater Academy’s Traditional (Chinese) Opera School. Ms. LI is the leader of the opera figure subject, and she has won the National Art Awards several times. She is also the opera figure lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and many European and American training programs.

Fanglan MU

Fanglan MU, member of the Chinese Art Association and the president of Big Art Museum. She is a successful curator and entrepreneur, Her Chinese painting works have been presented on many exhibitions, the most famous of which is the ‘Chinese Fairy’ series. She was also a lecturer at Shanghai University.

Dr. Ouchul HWANG

Dr. Ouchul HWANG, Korean-American. He is a vising scholar of the Institute of Cultural and Creative Industry of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr. HWANG is also a famous director, filmmaker, painter and sculptor. His film ‘Takao Dancer’ (directed with Wenshing HO) won the Best Foreign Language Film of the ‘Love is Folly’ Bulgarian International Film Festival.

Professor Guancheng WANG

Professor Guancheng WANG, a Neo-Taoism Scholar, is the Dean of the Laotzu Academy of Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is also a Visiting Professor of the Institute of Laotzu Studies of Sichuan University.

Dr. Kai YU

Dr. Kai YU, member of IEEE (InstituteofElectrical and Electronics Engineers, the world’s largest technical professional organization). He is a special researcher for the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is also a winner of National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars.

Paul CHENG

Paul CHENG, member of SFPC and founder of Of Course (www.ofcourse.io) creative computing school. He is a distinguished lecturer for the Parsons school of art and design. He uses a variety of visual media studies (such as robots and interactive installations, etc) and computer technology to explore cultural differences.

Shirley ZHAO

Shirley ZHAO, owner of Shirley’s Temple – Art (an International Artist Residence & Salon Project). She is a Chinese-German documentary director, as well as the founder of 4C (Children help Children Charity Council).

Admission Requirements:

Open to international undergraduate and graduate students. Students must be enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students prior to applying for this program. Recent college graduates and professionals who are interested in learning Chinese culture are also welcome.

Students of Non-English speaking countries should provide an English language proficiency certificate. IELTS no less than 6.0, TOEFL no less than 79 points, and TOEIC no less than 800 points. (If major in English, please provide the relevant certificates.)
