The 1st ICCI Professional Thesis Defense & 2017 Forum on Talents and Leadership Development Held Successfully

On Nov. 8, the 1st ICCI Professional Thesis Defense of USC-SJTU Institute of Cultural and Creative Industry (ICCI) and 2017 Forum on Talents and Leadership Development were held successfully at ICCI’s academic and research base Zizhu International Education Park.


The event attracted numerous distinguished guests and leaders in the cultural and creative industry, including Ying QIANG, Vice-director of Shanghai Cultural and Creative Office, Lisa X. XU, Vice-president of SJTU, Weimin ZHANG, Executive Dean of ICCI, Jinzhang JIANG, Vice Dean of ICCI, Haoqing WANG, Director of ICCI Centre for Cooperation and Education Development, scholars from SJTU, over 30 ICCI industrial supervisors, entrepreneurs, and heads of human resources departments from various cultural and creative companies.

24 ICCI students presented their theses in the 1st ICCI Professional Thesis Defense. The topics of their theses vary widely from one to another, covering areas of Game, Entertainment, Internet+, Finance, Museum, Real Estate, Film, Music, Intellectual Property, etc. For instance, Dongmei RONG examined the creative business model of the offshore IP special exhibition in Chinese cultural industry through case study of the Fantasy World Exhibition; Zixing WU researched on the development and operation of Shanghai private museums under new media environment taking Yichang Museum as an example; Yang YU studied the copyright management by looking at Premier League case from the Xin Ying Sports Company’s perspective.

Over 30 entrepreneurs and experts from the cultural and creative industry were invited to be the professional theses’ reviewers and members of the thesis defense committee together with academic supervisors from SJTU. These industrial experts offered professional critics and advices on the theses from the industrial point of view. This practice tightened the connection between academic study and industrial  learning in the cultivation of talents for the cultural and creative industry.

After the thesis defense, ICCI opened its floor to the 2017 Forum on Talents and Leadership Development. The forum focused on discussions of educational development of cultural and creative industry with two major topics, the Education and Development of Cultural and Creative Talents in the Creative Era and the Cultivation and Development of Cultural and Creative Talents’ Leadership in Globalization.

ICCI Executive Dean Weimin ZHANG expressed in his welcome remarks that ICCI is always willing to deepen cooperation between cultural and creative enterprises with the aim of cultivating future leaders for the industry. SJTU Vice President, Lisa XU welcomed all the guests on behalf of the university and she said, “Outstanding graduates are the main engine for transforming the educational results into industry power. It is also the primary testimony for successfully building a world-class discipline in ICCI. SJTU welcomes more industrial experts to take part in the cultivation of future leaders for the industry. ” Ying Qiang mentioned that when we were saying science, culture and creativity can revitalize the city, we were actually talking about the power of cultural and creative talents. He was happy to witness so many excellent students in ICCI who might become mainstay of cultural industry development in Shanghai.

In the meantime, initiated by ICCI Centre of Cooperation and Education Development, the project of Chinese Cultural and Creative Industry Orange Report (Research Project of Cultural and Creative Industry Talents and Leadership Development) was officially launched. Researches will be conducted as a comparative study among 5 pairs of cities, London vs. Beijing, New York vs. Shanghai, San Francisco vs. Guangzhou, Tokyo vs. Shenzhen and Milan vs. Chengdu. Representative case studies of 50 cultural and creative companies, interviews with 100 entrepreneurs and 2000 questionnaire researches with industrial practitioners will be performed. Building on resources and data from the institute and industry, a comprehensive industry report will be published to reveal the future direction of the cultural and creative industry. Later on, the Orange Report will publish periodically. Next, appointment letters were awarded to 8 ICCI industrial supervisors, Kai CHEN, Chunping XU, Bei LU, Feng CHENG, Qinghui ZHOU, Yao LIU, Qiming YIN, Runhe XU.

2017 Shanghai Cultural an Creative Talents Career Fair was held simultaneously at ICCI, providing cultural and creative enterprises opportunities to recruit outstanding industrial talents. Over 20 companies including Shanghai Film Group Corporation, CMC Group, Focus Media, Nielsen, Migu, Himalaya FM, Toonmax Media, Fengyuzhu, DOBE, CPIT Shanghai Exhibition Co. Ltd. took part in the career fair. The event attracted over 300 university students home and abroad. ICCI will keep organizing events like this to build a bridge between our students and cultural and creative industry employers.
