A ‘Gene Ontology’ of Immersive Media for Museums
  • SJTU-Warwick Joint Seed Fund, research award (50,000RMB + 5,00GBP), for “A ‘Genetic Ontology’ of Immersive Media for Museums,” a collaboration and AI indexing computer science investigation with Professor Jianhua Yang, Warwick Manufacturing Group, Warwick University, UK, 2023-24.

  • Over the last several years, the use of immersive media for museum exhibition and education programs has exploded.  During covid restrictions, museums of varying sizes around the world implemented programs to allow remote access and remote experiences of museum collections.  Moving forward, institutions are seeking to assess what media experiences are effective for education, promotion, revenue streams, and enhancing audience experiences in general.  This research project seeks to use new computer science techniques, suitable for AI implementations, to develop a taxonomy for categorizing and assessing immersive media experiences. Instead of a traditional hierarchical categorization method, we will base the taxonomy on Genetic Ontology, where clusters of features are identified and connected, in a network structure, with clusters of effects and relationships.
