Shanghai Jiao Tong University students won the first prize in the 2022 East China College Students Chemical Engineering Design Competition and the East China Selection Competition of the 16^th National College Students Chemical Engineering Design Competition.

The Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China and China Education association of Chemical Industry organized the 16th National College Students Chemical Engineering Design Competition under the title sponsorship of Zhejiang Titan Design & Engineering Co., Ltd.. This event is the largest and the most influential professional competition in China for undergraduate students studying chemical engineering. It is in the list of 2021 national college student competitions (56 in total) and the evaluation system of university discipline competitions.

The competition is to design a 1,4-butanediol production plant or to design a technical transformation plan of an existing 1,4-butanediol production plant for a large-scale chemical company. The technology applied should meet China's green and low-carbon development requirements.

From July 20 to 22, a team consisting of Guozhi QIAN, Hangfei YU, Xicai TIAN, Jiayin GAO and Yiyan WANG, all 2019 undergraduates from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, participated in the 2022 Shanghai College Student Chemical Design Competition with the project named "Use Modified Acetal Method to Achieve the 100,000-ton Annual Production of 1,4-Butanediol". Among the 53 teams in Shanghai, SJTU team won the first prize and advanced to the East China regional competition. Several teachers including Xuegang LI, Yijun HE, Jianmin YAN, Shunchao GU, Yunxiang PAN and Xianjin LUO jointly guided the team during the competition.

The team members overcame unfavorable conditions such as the epidemic and completed their works with efficiency and high quality. The students have improved their ability to learn independently and apply advanced manufacturing technologies and tools in practice. Attending the competition helps strengthen students’ awareness of innovation and cooperation, upgrade students’ ability of engineering design and practicability, promote the reform of classroom teaching, renew teaching contents and improve practical teaching of chemical engineering in the college.
